What is an OB/GYN hospitalist?
An OB/GYN hospitalist is a board-certified or board-eligible physician who provides obstetric and gynecologic care services to hospital patients as needed. OB/GYN hospitalists do not replace your OB/GYN physician; instead, they provide any necessary care and monitoring until your physician arrives.
What does an OB/GYN hospitalist do?
At Carroll Hospital Center, OB/GYN hospitalists provide around-the-clock OB/GYN care to women admitted to our emergency department (ED) or Family Birthplace. Services they provide may include:
- Measuring cervix dilation
- Labor induction
- Performing and/or ordering lab studies, fetal monitoring and ultrasounds
- Assisting with vaginal and cesarean (C-section) deliveries
- Assessing pain management needs
- Stabilizing patients admitted to the ED
- Assessing pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, ovarian torsion and heavy bleeding
- Providing comprehensive OB/GYN care for patietns with no local or assigned physician
What about my OB/GYN physician?
OB/GYN hospitalists do not replace your regular OB/GYN physician. During your stay, we will work closely with your OB/GYN to provide continuity of care and keep him or her informed at all times. Think of us as an extension of your OB/GYN physician.
Are OB/GYN hospitalists available to all patients?
OB/GYN hospitalists are available to any female patient in the Family Birthplace or ED. It is not necessary to request their services; an OB/GYN hospitalist will visit you upon admission to review your case and answer any questions you may have.
When are OB/GYN hospitalists available?
OB/GYN hospitalists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They do not have outside practices, allowing them to focus exclusively on your care.
What if I do not have an OB/GYN physician?
Patients admitted to Carroll Hospital Center with no local or assigned OB/GYN will be cared for by one of our OB/GYN hospitalists. If you need a referral to an OB/GYN physician, you may call the Carroll Hospital Center physician referral line at 410-871-7000.
