Westminster, Md. – (August 29, 2013) — Carroll Hospital Center was recently recognized for its patient safety initiatives and quality improvement efforts after being presented with the 2013 Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement by the Delmarva Foundation for Medical Care, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Maryland.
Columbus Giles, M.D., Delmarva Foundation chief medical officer, presented the prestigious award to members of Carroll Hospital Center’s executive team during a special ceremony held at the hospital on August 26. Staff members from various departments, including nursing and quality improvement, physicians and the hospital’s executive team, who played a pivotal role in helping the hospital earn the award, attended the ceremony to celebrate the achievement.
The Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement honors individual hospitals that excel in patient safety and quality improvement. To receive the award, the hospital met specific performance improvement criteria on 14 measures in four national inpatient clinical areas: acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, surgical care improvement and pneumonia.
“This is an amazing achievement,” said Dr. Giles. “It takes the work of the entire team, through leadership and the hard work of people on the ground to earn this award.”
“It’s the staff’s dedication to patient care that had a huge impact on making this happen,” said Leslie Simmons, R.N., FACHE, Carroll Hospital Center president, as she addressed hospital employees during the award ceremony. “Because of everyone’s efforts we’ve received this award and are working towards better care of our patients every day.”
The Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement is among several awards Carroll Hospital Center has received recognizing the organization for its patient safety efforts and high quality care. The hospital has been ranked number one in Maryland, from 2011 to 2013, and among the top 100 in the nation, in 2013, for overall hospital care and overall medical care by CareChex®, a division of Comparion. The hospital has also received four certificates for success in eliminating central line-associated bloodstream infections (BSIs) as part of the On the CUSP: Stop BSI national patient safety initiative.
