Westminster, Md. – (June 4, 2013) — The Carroll Hospital Center Board of Directors unanimously voted today to nameLeslie Simmons, R.N., FACHE, president of Carroll Hospital Center effective July 1.
This is the next step in the succession process developed by the hospital’s board of directors to transition administrative leadership in anticipation of the 2015 retirement of current President & CEO John M. Sernulka.
“The board is delighted that we have such a talented leader in Leslie, who has grown in the organization over the last 14 years,” said Ethan Seidel, Ph.D., chairman of the board of directors. “She will continue the hospital’s tradition of strong leadership and a family-like culture that is focused on providing high quality, compassionate care.”
Sernulka will continue to lead the hospital as CEO, with a focus on future strategies and a commitment to the hospital’s vision of being the best place to work, practice medicine and receive care. During Sernulka’s 25 years at the hospital, the organization has experienced significant growth in facilities, programs and services, market share and community support.
Under Sernulka’s leadership the hospital has nearly tripled in size, boasting primarily private patient rooms, state-of-the-art operating suites and an expansive emergency department. Technology is second to none with the latest in robotics for surgical care and medication management, as well as modern diagnostic equipment and an extensive information technology infrastructure.
In addition, outpatient facilities were developed in Eldersburg, Mt. Airy, Hampstead, Reisterstown, Taneytown and Westminster to provide convenient, high quality laboratory services and access to physician specialists.
As a leader in the organization for nearly 14 years, Simmons has been instrumental in driving Carroll Hospital Center’s outstanding achievements in quality with a focus on accountability and transparency. The hospital has been recognized for numerous awards, including being rated number one in Maryland and the Region (Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia) for Overall Hospital and Medical Care by CareChex®, a national rating organization, for the past three years. In addition, Simmons’ strong clinical background, from her more than 24 years of experience in numerous aspects of the health care industry, has been an asset in creating a culture of patient-centered care and uncompromising commitment to high performance at the hospital through the development of clinical service lines and increased participation in statewide collaboratives and best-practice initiatives.
A resident of Westminster, Simmons earned her associate degree in nursing from Anne Arundel Community College and her Bachelor of Science in nursing and Master of Management Administration from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.
Simmons is the past president of the Maryland Organization of Nurse Executives and is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. She also served a five-year term as a commissioner on the governor’s Taskforce for the Nursing Commission. She is a board member of the YMCA of Central Maryland and was appointed by the governor to the Maryland Health Quality and Cost Council. Simmons was recognized as one of The Daily Record’s “2012 Top 100 Women in Maryland,” and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
