In spring 2012, Carroll Hospital Center earned the distinction of receiving its Nurses Improving Care
for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) designation. This designation demonstrates the specialized training the hospital’s staff has in caring for and treating geriatric patients.
All of the hospital’s inpatient nursing staff has received basic NICHE education in which nurses and patient care technicians are trained to care for acutely ill geriatric patients and how that care may differ from younger patients, especially in areas such as safety and falls prevention; skin care preservation efforts; medications; orientation; supervision needs; ambulating; and mental health needs.
The designation also provides the hospital’s nursing staff access to materials, resources and educational tools that allow them to broaden their knowledge of the social and physical needs of older patients, enabling them to provide the specialized treatment they need.
Carroll Hospital Center is one of 340 hospitals in the United States to receive the NICHE designation.
