Comprehensive, compassionate care for children who have been sexually assaulted
Our Pediatric Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (S.A.F.E.) program provides a safe, comfortable environment for sexual assault victims under age 13 to receive the medical care and emotional support they need. Carroll Hospital Center also provides an Adult SAFE program for those ages 13 and older.
What is child sexual assault?
Any forced or tricked sexual contact between a child and adult or older child is considered sexual assault. Examples include:
- Rape or attempted rape
- Anal sex (sodomy)
- Fondling
- Indecent exposure
- Use of a child in prostitution or pornography
What should I do if I suspect my child has been sexually assaulted?
If your child hints that he or she may have been sexually assaulted or tells you about a specific incident, remain calm and reassure your child that you believe him or her. Mark sure your child understands that he or she is NOT to blame. Take your child to the nearest hospital immediately so he or she can be treated and examined for any injuries. Carroll Hospital Center is the designated pediatric sexual assault center in Carroll County.
What will the S.A.F.E. program do?
Soon after arriving at the hospital, an emergency department physician will examine your child to check for any injuries or medical issues requiring immediate attention.
We are required by Maryland State law to report suspected child assault to Child Protective Services (CPS). A CPS investigator and a law enforcement officer from the Carroll County Advocacy and Investigation Center (CCAIC) will speak to you and your child at the hospital or by phone to determine if an investigation is warranted.
CPS and CCAIC may decide that your child needs a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam, which may be performed that same day, or scheduled for another time. This exam is performed by a pediatrician and one or more of our pediatric forensic nurse examiners. These specially trained health professionals will conduct a thorough examination of your child, which may include taking photos to document their findings.
What happens after the exam?
Carroll Hospital Center will give all examination records, evidence and findings to CPS to pursue your case. We also provide expert witness testimony for the court system and appropriate referrals for follow-up care and counseling for both you and your child. We understand this is an extremely difficult time for your family. Please know that we are here to help you and your child in any way we can. For more information, call 410-871-6655.
