In each of our medical units, staff is specially trained to meet the needs of the patients they serve. They also are committed to creating an environment that accommodates the latest in medical technology to help you get better faster. This technology--from state-of-the-art medical equipment and computer systems to video cameras and lasers--benefits the medical team and patients alike.

Even in this high-tech environment, Carroll Hospital Center retains its personal touch. We treat our patients as if they are treasured family members, friends and neighbors--because most of them are. No matter where you live, we’ll provide you with the exceptional services and high-quality care you deserve.

Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit
Elderly adults comprise a rapidly growing segment of the U.S. population--one that has a variety of unique health care needs and concerns. The only unit of its kind in the area, Carroll Hospital Center’s Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit is designed to provide acute care for patients who are at least 75 years of age, have a number of health conditions and require short-term hospitalization.

Combining high-tech, high-touch amenities, the GEM unit offers the best in medical care with all of the comforts of home. Our special attention to detail not only creates a warm, welcoming environment for patients, it also fosters more effective recovery.

The unit features a unique, spacious area for the medical team to offer group & individual therapy and activities.

Each room is equipped with state-of-the-art beds that gently shift the patient’s weight at regular intervals to enhance comfort and prevent pressure sores. The beds also feature scales for convenient weight monitoring and built-in alarm systems to prevent patients from falling out of bed.

Beyond these special touches, each patient on the GEM Unit receives personalized attention from a trained geriatrics nurse. In addition, an individualized treatment plan is designed by a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals to ensure that every patient receives effective, coordinated care.

Pediatric Unit
You never want to imagine your child in a hospital. But if the need arises, you can rest assured that Carroll Hospital Center’s Pediatric Unit will rise to the occasion with a skilled team of doctors, nurses and other medical staff who are dedicated to providing the best possible care and ensuring the quickest recovery.

In-house pediatricians and specially trained nurses staff the unit 24 hours a day. In addition, a range of pediatric specialists are available to meet your child’s unique medical needs. Special touches on the unit--such as brightly colored walls and cheerful artwork created by children right here in our community--help ease patient’s anxiety and enhance the healing process.

When your child’s health is on the line, it helps to know that high quality care is available every day, close to home.

Sleep and Breathing Disorders Laboratory
Each day, millions of Americans start their days without the benefit of the minimum requirement of sleep. When this becomes the norm rather than the exception, the resulting sleep deprivation can lead to a multitude of health and behavioral problems, from high blood pressure and mood fluctuations to decreased productivity at work and even overeating.

Many of these sleep problems are related to actual medical conditions. In fact, an estimated 40 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder, many of which are undiagnosed or untreated. The good news is you can rest easy knowing that the Sleep and Breathing Disorders Laboratory, located in the hospital’s Outpatient Center, is here to help.

Our team of physicians and technicians specialize in providing comprehensive evaluation and treatment of a variety of sleep disorders, including insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, narcolepsy, sleep apnea, sleepwalking and restless leg syndrome. During testing, each patient has a private room decorated in comfortable, home-like décor, complete with a TV and VCR. The most advanced technologies are used to ensure an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.

Don’t wait for a good night’s sleep! If you or someone you know may benefit from a sleep evaluation, talk to your doctor. Patients must be referred to this program by a physician. Most medical insurance plans cover sleep tests, which are performed as outpatient procedures. For more information about the Sleep and Breathing Disorders Laboratory, please call 410-871-7170.
