We’ve put careful attention into the design of our private birthing suites to provide many of the comforts of home while you bring a new child into the world. Each spacious room features:

• A private suite that includes a sofa bed to accomodate one support person overnight
• A private bathroom
• A television that also offers OB education
• A large picture window to fill the room with sunlight
• The ability to stay in this same room throughout your stay

Our Labor, Delivery, Recover and Postpartum (LDRP) suites look and feel much like a hotel suite, with all of the necessary medical equipment tastefully concealed behind artwork and custom cabinetry. Within moments, your LDRP suite becomes a delivery room that promotes a safe delivery and monitors the health of both mother and baby.

For your convenience, all of your care is provided in this same suite. Even after your baby is born, a pediatrician will examine him or her right in your room to allow you to observe and ask questions.

Skilled Medical Staff
Family Birthplace patients are assured of the best possible care with around-the-clock access to a range of skilled, board-certified physicians, including OB/GYNs, pediatricians and anesthesiologists. And our highly skilled, experienced nursing staff is available 24 hours a day.

Mother-Baby Nursing
Caring, specially trained nurses provide you and your baby with one-on-one attention. This means that one nurse will care for both you and your baby, creating streamlined care, clearer communication and extra time helping you learn to care for your newborn.

Lactation Support
The Family Birthplace offers breastfeeding support through our certified Lactation Consultants, nurse specialists trained to assist you with breastfeeding techniques during your hospital stay. Even after you’ve been discharged, our Lactation Consultants encourage you to call them at 410-871-7024 for advice, especially during your first week at home.

All breastfeeding mothers also are welcome to attend our Breastfeeding Support Group for moms every Thursday from Noon to 1:30 p.m., at the hospital.

Pain Management (PCEA)
All delivering mothers at The Family Birthplace benefit from the latest in medical technology. This includes various pain management techniques, such as PCEA (Patient-Controlled Epidural Analgesia), an option that allows women in labor to control their own epidural administration and manage pain more effectively.

Prenatal Classes
The hospital’s Learning Center offers a variety of educational programs and classes to prepare your family for the birth of your baby. Our ongoing offerings include:

Security
The Family Birthplace takes great effort to ensure the safety and security of your precious new infant with security measures that include:

• Video cameras throughout the unit
• Staff who wear color-coded uniforms and photo ID badges for easy identification
• Uniquely coded bracelets for you and your new baby

Special Care Nursery
Most deliveries go smoothly, but our Level II Special Care Nursery is equipped with the latest medical technology and specialized staff to care for premature, high-risk or multiple-birth babies when needed. Staffed around the clock by a board-certified attending pediatrician and a specially trained team of nurses, the nursery is equipped to give your baby the special care he or she needs plus comfortable, private space for families.
