Maternity

Welcoming a new member to your family is an extraordinary experience. That’s why Carroll Hospital Center has taken special care to make The Family Birthplace just the right setting for this momentous occasion. One of the first hospitals in the Baltimore area to offer family-centered care, The Family Birthplace has distinguished itself by offering mother-baby nursing, single-room maternity suites, in-room accommodations for one support person and so much more. Read on to see how The Family Birthplace can help you bring your baby into the world in a safe, comfortable and memorable way.

Web Nursery
Meet your family newest arrival via this secure, online nursery site. (You’ll need to have your visitor password ready to view baby photos.)

Advanced Technology
Our suites may look like a cozy bedroom, but beneath the stylish décor lies a high-tech medical system designed to ensure the utmost comfort and safety for you and your baby. Within moments, your Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Post-Partum (LDRP) suite becomes a delivery room filled with the latest medical equipment to promote a safe delivery and monitor the health of mother and baby.

Medical Staff
Family Birthplace patients are assured of the best possible care with around-the-clock access to a range of skilled, board-certified physicians, including OB/GYNs, pediatricians and anesthesiologists. And, our high-level, experienced nursing staff is available 24 hours a day to meet your every need.

Mother-Baby Nursing
Caring, specially trained nurses provide you and your baby with one-on-one specialized attention. This means that one nurse will care for both you and your baby, creating streamlined care, clearer communication and maximum time for education concerning the health and care of your newborn child.

Lactation Support
The Family Birthplace offers breastfeeding support through our certified R.N. Lactation Consultants, specialists who are trained to assist you with breastfeeding techniques during your hospital stay. Even after you’ve been discharged, our Lactation Consultants encourage your calls for help when you need it most, especially during the first week. As another means of support, all breastfeeding mothers are welcome to attend our Breastfeeding Support Group for Moms every Thursday from Noon to 1:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Women’s Place.

Pain Management (PCEA)
All delivering mothers at The Family Birthplace benefit from the latest in medical technology. This includes various pain management techniques, such as PCEA (Patient-Controlled Epidural Analgesia), a new option that allows women in labor to control their own epidural administration and manage pain more effectively.

Prenatal Classes
The hospital’s Learning Center offers a variety of educational programs and classes to prepare your family for the birth of your baby. Our ongoing offerings include Prepared Childbirth, Childbirth Review, Breastfeeding, Sibling Preparation (“I Am Special”), Grandparenting Today and Infant CPR. Pre- and postnatal exercise programs also are available through The Women’s Place. For a complete listing of upcoming classes, please search our online events calendar.

Security
The Family Birthplace takes great effort to ensure maximum safety and security for all of our families and, especially, for your precious, new infant. Video cameras are located throughout the unit to monitor the activity of staff, families and guests. The Family Birthplace staff wears color-coded uniforms and photo ID badges so they are easily recognized. Unique coded bracelets also are placed on you and your new baby as an added measure of security.

Single-Room Maternity Care
We’ve put thoughtful attention to bringing you many of the comforts of home in our private birthing suites. Each spacious room features a guest area, including a sofa bed for overnight accommodations, private bathroom, built-in television featuring our OB Education Channel and a large picture window to fill the room with sunlight.

After you are admitted to your suite, you will remain in the same room until your departure. Although the LDRP suites look and feel much like a hotel suite, you’ll find all of the necessary medical equipment close at hand, tastefully concealed behind artwork and custom cabinetry. In addition, a bassinet is provided in your suite so your infant may remain with you as much as you wish. A pediatrician will perform physical examinations of your new baby right in your room so you can observe and ask questions.

Special Care Nursery
Most deliveries go smoothly but, when complications arise, our Level II Special Care Nursery offers the latest medical technology to care for premature, high-risk or multiple-birth babies. Staffed around the clock by a board-certified attending pediatrician and a specially trained team of nurses, the nursery is equipped to give your baby the special care he or she needs.
