Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit
A GEM of a unit.
Our 24-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit, the only one of its kind in the area, is designed to provide acute care for patients who are at least 75 years of age, have a number of health conditions and require short-term hospitalization.
What sets Carroll Hospital Center’s GEM Unit apart from others is our unique blend of high-tech, high-touch amenities that offer all of the comforts of home.
The unit features a unique, spacious area for the medical team to offer group & individual therapy and activities.
And our special attention to the details on this unit not only creates a warm, home-like environment for patients, it also fosters a more effective recovery.
To benefit our patients, this unit is equipped with the latest in medical technology. In each room, state-of-the-art beds are found which gently shift the patient’s weight at regular intervals to prevent pressure sores. These beds also are equipped with scales to weigh patients and built-in alarm systems to prevent patients from falling out of bed.
Not only do the patients on the GEM Unit reap the benefits of advanced technology and a warm atmosphere, but each patient receives caring and personal attention provided by one of the unit’s specially-trained geriatric nurses. Our multidisciplinary medical team works together to coordinate effective, compassionate care for each patient.
