EnCARE Program

When nurses in Carroll Hospital Center’s emergency department noticed a dramatic increase in the number of drug- and alcohol-related incidents, they didn’t just treat the injuries—they took action. As a result, a local chapter of the national organization Emergency Nurses CARE (EnCARE) was born.

EnCARE is an awareness program that helps young people understand the damaging impact that drugs and alcohol can have on people of all ages, and on the lives of those around them. EnCARE nurses travel to community schools and organizations to present a compelling slide show-based seminar, followed by a down-to-earth question-and-answer session. Programs for seniors and programs on gun safety also are offered. Presentations can be specifically designed to meet the needs of a particular group.

Presentations include:

Learning to CARE, an interactive slide presentation for third to fifth graders that covers issues related to alcohol use, helpful and harmful drugs, the decision making process and peer pressure. This program can also be adapted to meet the needs of first graders.

Friday Night Video features a video presentation of a motor vehicle crash that involves alcohol abuse. Following the video, the EnCARE nurse leads a group discussion and demonstrates the “tools of the trade” used to save lives in situations like those seen in the video. These tools include incubation equipment, nasal gastric tubes, IV supplies, foley catheters and much more.

Daring to CARE is a program that examines the consequences of underage drinking and driving, safety belt non-compliance and the impact on families and friends.

STAR is a slide show that features real-life accounts of alcohol and drug misuse.

Gun Safety is an all-new program designed to educate children and adolescents on gun safety and the consequences of gun misuse.

Take CARE is specifically geared toward those 55 and older and covers issues related to prescription and over-the-counter drug use and misuse, as well as alcohol abuse.
