Acupuncture, massage, reiki, reflexology, yoga and more
Today’s busy lifestyles leave little time to reflect, relax or take care of ourselves. That’s why Carroll Hospital Center’s Complementary Health Services offer a range of educational programs and therapies — including
acupuncture,
massage,
reiki ,
reflexology and
yoga — to help you care for your mind, body and spirit.
Complementary health therapies are used in conjunction with traditional medicine to help relieve disease symptoms, boost energy, reduce stress, manage pain and foster recovery. Many of these therapies have been practiced around the world for thousands of years.
Our Complementary Health Services are perfect whether you just want to relax, treat a particular symptom or health problem, or find the perfect gift. We offer individual treatments, group classes and educational programs.

Inpatient Services
We also offer massage and acupuncture for hospital patients who have an order from their physician (call 410-871-6161 for more information on these inpatient services).
Our complementary health services include:
Acupuncture
One of the oldest methods of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is based on the belief that life energy flows throughout the body and affects physical, mental and emotional health. During an acupuncture session, a trained practitioner inserts tiny, hair-thin needles into specific points on the body to help restore proper energy flow. When this energy is unblocked, the body is able to function more effectively. A comfortable therapy, acupuncture is used for a variety of therapeutic reasons — from relieving pain to promoting fertility.
Massage
Massage is a soothing therapy that promotes mental and physical relaxation, relieves muscle tension and increases energy, circulation and alertness. Our licensed, certified massage therapists offer a variety of bodywork techniques, including Swedish, hot stone body, pregnancy, cancer and mastectomy massage.
Hot Stone Massage
Hot stone body massage is used to deepen the relaxation of muscle tissue and increase circulation in areas of focus. This gentle but effective method uses thermal application and manipulation of stones to reduce stress and promote well being.
Infant Massage
Infants and parents alike can benefit from this participatory therapy. The release of "feel good" hormones during massage offers babies ages three weeks to six months welcome relief from the discomforts of teething, colic, congestion and emotional stress. One or both parents work directly with a certified message therapist to provide the treatment. An introductory one-hour session includes personalized instruction, massage, oil and a resource book.
Japanese Hot Stone Facial Massage
Using polished, smooth, round stones, our therapists provide a soothing, 30-minute treatment that stimulates facial tissues and nerves, while increasing blood circulation in the face. This brings added moisture and nutrients to the tissues and promotes cell regeneration for a healthy, glowing complexion.
Our certified Cancer and Mastectomy Massage Therapists provide a welcome, safe massage experience for those who have had a mastectomy or who have cancer. We also offer a lymphedema management program.
Reflexology
During this gentle treatment, pressure is applied to specific points on the feet that correspond to various parts of the body. Certified reflexologists use their thumbs and fingers to relax the feet and stimulate reflex zones that help to relieve tension, ease pain and improve circulation.
Reiki
A Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation, Reiki creates many beneficial effects, including feelings of peace, security and well-being. During the treatment, a Reiki practitioner transfers energy to the patient through light touch or by placing his or her hands above specific parts of the body. Like other complementary therapies, Reiki also can help to promote recovery and diminish side effects and symptoms of illness or disease.
Yoga
During our four- or eight-week yoga sessions, participants have the opportunity to experience this ancient exercise practice, which combines controlled breathing and a series of postures to help build strength, increase flexibility and promote balance. Beginner, advanced and prenatal classes are offered.
Educational Programs
Throughout the year, Carroll Hospital Center offers a series of introductory classes that allow you to explore traditional medicine therapies and mind-body techniques.
