Hospice is a relatively new concept in current medicine, though it’s been around since the Middle Ages. In 1974, the first hospice program was officially established in this country. Today, hospice is a philosophy of care by which the quality of life for terminally ill patients is enhanced through skilled, compassionate care.
Carroll Hospice opened its doors in 1986 to offer such care to patients and their families in its community. The program offers all components of hospice care, whether care is home-based or institution-based. Care is provided directly and in cooperation with a patient’s physician in a loving, concerned environment – most often the patient’s home.
Carroll Hospice is a member of the Hospice Network of Maryland, the National Hospice Organization, and is affiliated with Carroll Hospital Center and Carroll Home Care.

Services
The complete spectrum of traditional hospice care includes:
- A philosophy of care
- Pain management and symptom control
- Coordination of home an inpatient services
- Interdisciplinary team including physician, nurse, social worker, clergy, pharmacist, hospice volunteer and home health aides
- Bereavement care for family members — for a period up to 13 months
