FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Westminster, Md. – (December 10, 2008) — Josie Grant, a 13-year-old resident of Taneytown, recently donated $2,100 in gifts to Carroll Hospital Center on December 2, for children in the hospital’s care.
The gifts were donated to help children feel more comfortable and have some fun during their hospital stay. The items included dozens of stuffed animals, toys, candy, books, games, rattles and gift certificates Josie collected from a variety of businesses and individuals in Carroll County.
The eighth grade New Windsor Middle School student, who wants to become a pediatric nurse in the future, decided to collect the items after visiting her grandfather in another hospital and noticing how pediatric patients there had little to nothing to do while receiving medical care.
“When children go to the hospital they often don’t have any toys, so this [donation] is a way for them to have something to play with and have fun in the hospital, even though they are there because they are sick.”
Josie plans to continue collecting and donating items to Carroll Hospital Center through a foundation she’s created called “Josie’s Smiles for Pediatrics.” She also hopes to expand her foundation to allow her to donate gifts to pediatric patients in other Maryland hospitals. Carroll Hospital Center, founded in 1961 as Carroll County General Hospital, is a nonprofit, acute care facility offering the latest in medical technology, experienced medical professionals in a variety of specialties and a continuum of programs and services to meet the needs of the community.
