FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Westminster, Md. – (December 24, 2007) — In a special ceremony held on November 19, the Capital District Kiwanis Foundation presented a check for $1,000 to Carroll Hospital Center to support an expansion of the hospital’s Level II Special Care Nursery, designed for babies born as early as 32 weeks. Leaders and members of several Carroll County Kiwanis Clubs — including presidents of the Westminster, Greater Westminster and Mount Airy Kiwanis Clubs — attended the check presentation ceremony.

Over the past year, Kiwanis Clubs in Carroll County have donated a total of $7,000 to support the Special Care Nursery expansion. With premature births steadily increasing both nationally and statewide, the Special Care Nursery is currently in the midst of an expansion effort that will double its size and capacity. Once complete, the nursery will boast 10 intensive-care beds equipped with the latest neonatal technology, including upgraded cardio respiratory centralized monitors.

“The local Kiwanis clubs have always been generous supporters of the hospital and the community we serve,” said Linda M. Frisch, director of grants & major gifts for the Carroll Hospital Center Foundation. “This latest donation will allow more premature babies to receive the specialized care they need, close to home. We greatly appreciate the Kiwanis’ commitment to giving these patients the best possible start.”

At the check presentation ceremony, attendees included Donna Riley, president of the Kiwanis Club of Westminster; Marion Taylor, president of the Kiwanis Club of Mount Airy; Fred Lohnes, Past Lt. Governor of the Capital District Kiwanis, Division 9 and member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Westminster; Linda Grogan, director of Women’s & Children’s Services at Carroll Hospital Center; Beth Jacobs, chair of Young Children Priority One Project, Kiwanis Club of Mount Airy; and Ben Smith, president of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Westminster.

Founded in 1961, Carroll Hospital Center is a nonprofit, acute care facility offering a broad continuum of services—including comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and community programs—for all stages of life.
