Westminster, Md. (November 1, 2006) — Each year smokers across the nation take a step towards a healthier lifestyle on the third Thursday of November, by putting out their cigarettes or smoking less during the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout. Carroll Hospital Center will be participating in the national effort on Thursday, November 16, by offering two free programs to community members and hospital associates to raise awareness on effective ways to quit smoking.

Smokers who are looking to start to quit or would like to refresh a current quit plan, are invited to attend the Jump Start to Quick Quit Program from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on November 16. The jump start program will be held at the Carroll Hospital Center Learning Center, Classroom C, under the direction of Susan Rinehart of the Carroll County Health Department. Light breakfast and lunch will be served during the jump start class.

Free individual assessments will be available at the Carroll Hospital Center Learning Center conference room, from noon until 2 p.m. on November 16. Bill Zwick of GlaxoSmithKline will conduct the assessments. Each assessment takes approximately 10 minutes and includes facial age progression, lung function screening, carbon monoxide screening and counseling on nicotine supplements.
