FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Westminster, Md. (September 6, 2006) — Jamisson South and Khalilah Bridges were presented with the Carroll Hospital Center Foundation 2006 Libman Nursing Scholarship at a reception held August 15 at Carroll Hospital Center. This is the third year that the awardees have each received $2,000 to cover tuition, books and fees. Both recipients are nursing students at Carroll Community College.

The Libman Nursing Scholarship is named in honor of Carroll Hospital Center Foundation Board of Trustees member and former president of the Coca Cola Bottling Co., Frank Herbert Libman, whose gracious donation made the scholarship fund possible. “My sister taught me the importance of giving towards educational programs. I wanted to find a way to accomplish this goal that also would be the greatest help to my community,” said Libman. “I feel setting up a scholarship for nurse education benefits the hospital, the community college and patients and family members that will ultimately be cared for by these wonderful nurses.”

Libman Nursing Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in the nursing program at Carroll Community College and must also be a resident of Carroll County. Applications are accepted in May of each year. For more information about the 2007 Libman Nursing Scholarship, please call 410-871-6200. “We are grateful to be able to fund these nursing scholarships,” said Ellen Finnerty Myers, vice president of development for Carroll Hospital Center. “It gives the hospital an opportunity to help support the education of future nurses, which ensures a healthier future for Carroll County residents.”

Both award recipients are excited about future nursing opportunities at Carroll Hospital Center after completing their nursing programs. South hopes to work in geriatrics or hospice nursing. “I have had the wonderful opportunity to have been able to work in several nursing homes and realized that I can make a difference,” said South. “I believe that this specialty of nursing would be a great fit for me.”

Bridges has already taken many of her prerequisite classes and is looking forward to beginning her nursing education in the fall. “I wanted to make a difference in peoples’ lives. That is my reason for choosing a nursing career and I believe that I will be able to help people, when they need help most,” said Bridges. She plans on pursuing a nursing career in Labor and Delivery. “I want to be a labor and delivery nurse because I love all aspects of this specialty, especially being able to help families during this exciting, joyous time.”

Carroll Hospital Center, founded in 1961 as Carroll County General Hospital, is a nonprofit, acute care facility offering a continuum of services, including comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and community programs.
