Westminster, Md. (October 18, 2005) — Patients being treated for cancer are often concerned about their appearance, especially after losing their hair. But a recent donation of over 100 hats, scarves and caps to The Women’s Place at Carroll Hospital Center will certainly offer patients an attractive and fun solution.
Karen Turner of Hampstead, along with some of her fellow independent Longaberger ® Basket consultants, organized a "hat shower" during their annual Horizon of Hope ® luncheon. Each attendee was asked to bring a hat or head covering to the event. Turner, who herself had treatment for cervical cancer five years ago, said the response was overwhelming. "Most people brought three or four items. It was really inspiring."
Women’s Services Coordinator Eileen Overfelt, R.N., B.S.N. at The Women’s Place said Turner’s donation will bring a lot of joy to cancer patients.
"When patients lose their hair, it really impacts self esteem," Overfelt said. "So, when women see the variety of hats, scarves and caps that they have to choose from at The Women’s Place, it uplifts their spirits. They are having a lot of fun going through the selection, trying them on and picking out their favorites."
In addition to providing hats through the hospital’s Breast Center, Overfelt assists patients with information, access to support groups and even a visit to The Boutique at The Women’s Place, which offers private fittings for wigs, mastectomy bras and breast prostheses. If you would like more information about The Breast Center at The Women’s Place or would like to make a donation, please call 410-871-6161.
