Westminster, Md. – Carroll Hospital Center’s largest fundraising campaign, “Fulfilling the Promise,” has concluded with gifts and pledges totaling $10,044,607, surpassing its goal of $8 million.
“This is a historical achievement for our hospital and we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of our donors and the Foundation for this landmark fundraising effort for Carroll Hospital Center,” said John M. Sernulka, president and CEO of Carroll Hospital Center. “It is a testament to the tremendous support our hospital has in the community.”
Of the donations made to the campaign, 121 were of $10,000 or greater. The hospital’s employees, auxiliary, board members and medical staff contributed more than $3 million. Local businesses, individuals and other organizations pledged more than $7 million.
The “Fulfilling the Promise” campaign was launched in June 2002 to raise private funds for the expansion project at Carroll Hospital Center. The campaign officially kicked off with hospital board, physician and employee giving as its first phase (family phase), followed by a community phase that included major and annual gifts. Contributions to the campaign will fund approximately 25 percent of the hospital’s expansion and go toward an endowment fund for future equipment purchases and renovations.
Among the largest leadership gifts made included: The Carroll Hospital Center Auxiliary; Mr. Glenn Bair; Mr. Harvey Bair; Mr. Henry Bair; Mr & Mrs. Stanley H. (Jack) Tevis; Advanced Vacuum Co., Inc.; Carroll County Anesthesia Associates; The Shipley Family (Cedarhurst Enterprises); Mr. & Mrs. Martin K.P. Hill; Mr. & Mrs. Benny Kirkner; Mr. John & Mrs. Hedy McGinnis; Random House; Westminster Union Bank; Dr. & Mrs. Flavio Kruter; Branch Banking & Trust Co.; Mills’ Communication; and Thomas, Bennett & Hunter, Inc.
The campaign’s success was further sustained by support from the state and county. “Carroll Hospital Center was able to surpass the campaign’s original goal of $8 million through a strong, long-standing partnership with public, private and government sectors,” said Ellen Finnerty Myers, vice president of development at Carroll Hospital Center.
In addition, recent major gifts from Robin and Shirlyn Ford, and Dr. and Mrs. Chris Ballas helped propel the campaign well over the $10 million mark.
The “Fulfilling the Promise” campaign was directed by a campaign committee led by chairman Jack Tevis, president of S.H. Tevis & Son, Inc. Joining Tevis on the committee were:
Mark Pohlhaus, president and CEO of Westminster Union Bank and Pacesetter Division Chair
C. Todd Brown, past hospital board chairman and Board Division Co-Chair
G. Melvin Mills Jr., chairman of the Carroll Hospital Center Foundation Board of Trustees and Board Division Co-Chair
Lee Primm, hospital board chairman and Major Gift Division Co-Chair
Louna Primm, senior vice president of Branch Banking & Trust Co. and Major Gift Division Co-Chair
Andrew Green, M.D., chief of anesthesiology and Medical Staff Division Chair
Sue Bohn, hospital food service department and Employee Division Co-Chair
Kathy Palaia, R.N., Employee Division Co-Chair
“We are extremely proud and honored that so many individuals and organizations have chosen Carroll Hospital Center in which to make a considerable investment,” said Tevis. “The overwhelming generosity of our community will enable the hospital to maintain the tradition of superior health care it is known for.”
The impact of the campaign is already visible - in the new Emergency Department and main lobby that opened in December 2003, and in the five-story bed tower with all private rooms, now fully operational. Campaign funds also have been designated to fund future projects including an inpatient hospice facility and a new outpatient center that will house an expanded cardiac rehabilitation program and new services for diabetes, wound care and pulmonary rehabilitation.
“This campaign would not have had this level of success without the strong leadership, time and commitment of the entire campaign committee,” Finnerty Myers said. “They believed in the project and supported our vision to bring a new level of health care to the community.”
Founded in 1961 as Carroll County General Hospital, Carroll Hospital Center is a nonprofit, acute care facility offering a continuum of services, including comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and community programs.
