Carroll County General Hospital volunteers honored

Westminster, Md. – Volunteers at Carroll County General Hospital were honored for their outstanding service at the annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at Wilhelm Caterers, May 16. The luncheon was held in observance of National Volunteer Week, April 26-May 3.

More than 100 volunteers received pins and certificates of appreciation for total hours and years of service. John Sernulka, president and CEO of Carroll County General, commended the volunteers for their efforts and was joined by C. Todd Brown, chairman of the hospital’s board of directors, to individually recognize each volunteer. Entertainment was provided by Warren Therien and Carol Fenker of “Dancing Made Easy” and Richard Hayman of “Mood Swings.”

At Carroll County General, 179 volunteers devote their time and talent to help in many capacities throughout the hospital, from delivering mail and flowers to discharging patients, assisting staff with various administrative tasks and managing the information desk. Collectively, the group donated nearly 40,000 hours of service in 2002. Each summer, 40-50 junior volunteers join their adult counterparts in helping out in virtually all areas of the hospital.

“Our volunteers come from all walks of life and the one thing they have in common is the desire and dedication to help others,” said Mary Richards, director of volunteer services at Carroll County General Hospital. “They bring compassion and warmth to the hospital and fulfill many important roles to keep our hospital operating smoothly.”

Volunteers honored for years of service were: Thelma Coleman, 41 years; Erma Frock, 35 years; Margaret Martin, 31 years; Betty Wise, 30 years; Vera McCubbin, 29 years; Irene Danner, Arawanna Leckron and Susie Warner, 25 years; Helen Franklin, Ruth Harmon and Algie King, 24 years; Betty Shaum, 23 years; Gladys Stahley, 22 years; Audrey Graf, Marty Honeman, Ruth Maus, Catherine Pearson and Ruth Senseney, 21 years; Joe Shaum, 19 years; Lillian Hawkesworth, 18 years; Doris Steinberg, 16 years; Shirley Hayes, 15 years; Dottie Lyell and Phyllis Ullman, 13 years; Jane Armacost, Marty Clingan, Jack Nash and Marian Nash, 12 years; Ruth Bare, Louise Black, Marie Blank, Mary Bruff, Gloria Ewing, Mary Jane Edmunds, Ray Marconi, Vivian Phillips, Dolores Schwessinger and Norma Spencer, 11 years; Jean Brocato, Emmalie Bolte, Elizabeth Corbin, Lorraine Myers, Lenda Tingler and Betty Long, 10 years.

In addition, the following volunteers received service pins for 150 or more hours of service: Irene Danner, 30,000 hours; Phyllis Ullman, 13,000 hours; Ruth Harmon, 12,000 hours; Margaret Martin, 10,000 hours; Betty Shaum, 9,000 hours; Joe Shaum, 7,000 hours; Ruth Maus, 5,000 hours; Alice Crowl and Marian Nash, 3,000 hours; Lyndale Brandon, Robert Chrest, Beverly Rose and Anna Spittel, 2,000 hours; Gilbert Creutzer, Ann Goldman, Elizabeth Mathias, Marilyn Pucillo, Charles A. Salacuse, William F. Steinberg, Webster J. Taylor, Jr., 1,000 hours; Vicky Campbell, Janet Daut, Max A.
