Juanita Shifflett, R.N., is the registered nurse team leader in the Behavioral Health Services department. Juanita has been employed at the hospital since 1991 and helped with the opening of the Behavioral Health Services inpatient unit.
To be an R.N. team leader, one needs an associate degree in nursing and at least 18 months of nursing experience in a behavioral health setting. Previous leadership experience is also preferred.
Q: What are your job responsibilities?
A: I assist our manager of Behavioral Health with a variety of duties. I provide patient care on our inpatient unit as well as take on leadership duties within the department. I teach Associates when new systems and programs are developed and implemented, and I participate in the peer interviewing process. I am a resource to Associates and actively mentor and coach them to promote positive working relationships. Additionally, I work collaboratively with assigned service line groups to review and revise standards of care.
Q: What are the job requirements for your position?
A: You have to have excellent communication skills to be able to work with Associates, physicians, patients and families. It is also important to be flexible and willing to accept challenges.
Q: What do you like the most about your position?
A: I like the autonomy I have to make decisions. I also like the combination of overcoming challenges, feeling rewarded, having opportunities for growth and learning new things every day.
Q: What do you like the most about working for the hospital?
A: I am very grateful for the knowledge I have obtained here. I respect the trust I have gained through my interactions with my peers and patients. At times, I have worked with second generations of families, where they feel comfortable bringing additional family and friends to seek treatment here. I have also supported adolescents through adulthood in our programs. These experiences are very rewarding.
